This course taught by Antonio de Diego is presented as unique in our country to introduce students to active reflection on the history and historiography of Islam in the Iberian Peninsula. It is not only about giving names and dates, but also about thinking about the impact and legacy of Islamic culture in our memory and identity.
A heritage that is not limited to 1492, but that for centuries remained alive, traveled across the Atlantic and returned to become one of the realities of a diverse Spain. We will explore the main ideas and documentary sources that have shaped our knowledge of the Islamic, fleeing from the cliché and the typical, and preferring the corners with baraka to the museums.
Who is it intended for?
The course does not require any academic prerequisite, but a desire to learn and to question what we think we know about the history of Islam in Spain. We will start from the religious phenomenon of Islam to know how Islam has been present in the history and identity of our country from a “Muslim Friendly” narrative.
The course is aimed at both the general public interested in Islamic history and culture and professionals who use Islam: historians, heritage guides and interpreters, and primary and secondary school teachers.
Teaching methodology
The course is structured in eight sessions of one hour and a half. They will be online synchronous, one per week, through the Zoom platform. The first hour will be a lecture by the teacher on the programmed topic, the last half hour will be articulated in a participative debate with the students. The teacher’s part will be recorded and will be accessible to the students until one month after the end of the course.
Upon completion of the eight sessions of the course, the student will receive a certificate of completion issued by the Las Fuentes Foundation.

Faculty
Antonio de Diego is Professor of Philosophy at the Pablo de Olavide University (Seville) and Vice President of the Islamic Board of Spain. He also directs the Las Fuentes Foundation. He is the author of more than forty academic publications on Islamic history and thought, including the books “Sufismo Negro” ( 2019) and “Populismo Islámico” (2020).
